music I've been listening to lately that isn't theatre OR soundtracks

*audible gasps*

I know I know. Me?? Listening to music outside the genres of musical theater and film scores??? How did this happen????

oh, but it has happened. I hope ya'll are fine with it : ) I imagine it gets a little old to see my incessant Instagram sharing of this theatre album or other. I was listening to "Costume Party" on my drive home the other night and I briefly considered posting it but decided I'd done enough CFA rambling that I should just enjoy the music and let the sharing moment pass. You're welcome, I guess.

Ed Sheeran

Not going to spend any time describing who he is - you know already. And I have heard his music before - hello Supermarket Flowers & Perfect - but that was from hearing my friend's music and I'd never gone and listened on my own. But I randomly turned on his "divide" album one day on my drive and as I listened, I thought "Wow, I think I really like this." I'm a sucker for beautiful songwriting, I guess.

Cody Fry

I have no idea how "big" Cody Fry is in the general world, and the fact that I have only heard of him recently doesn't mean anything : ) A friend sent me one of his songs over Instagram and I've been obsessed ever since. His music has both a modern and cinematic quality to it. He's kinda done it all. Anyways, here are a few of my favorites.

| I Hear a Symphony | Pictures of Mountains | Photograph | Praying for Sunshine | Stay With Me | Flying |

Taylor Swift

You knew I had to mention her, right? Would it be a crime not to? Probably - considering 2020 and all. I have always shied away from her music, just because I usually dislike pop music. So when friends all over started posting about Folklore, I felt it was another one of those cultural "explosions of love" or something. I did not expect to enjoy Folklore so much. The rhythms. The melodies. I do think it's one of those "remember 2020" albums.

NEEDTOBREATHE

I grew up to Christian music, so of course I listened to NEEDTOBREATHE. But I never really liked the songs I heard on the radio. It was only in the past year, that I've really grown an appreciation and their style. Their album(s) "Live from the Woods" & "Acoustic Live vol. 1" are so excellent. They released an album last year too, and the cover art is out of this world. I listened to them so much last year that they made it to the top five in my Spotify wrapped.

| Survival | Who Am I | Banks | More Heart, Less Attack | A Place Only We Can Go | State I'm In (LIVE VERSION) | White Fences (LIVE VERSION) | Testify | Slumber | Keep Your Eyes Open |

The Oh Hellos

I don't remember how I heard about The Oh Hellos but it was either Spotify on shuffle-mode or through the soundtrack of some tv show or other. In any case I love their acoustic/rhythmic style (rhythm is a BIG part of my musical tastes, if you haven't already noticed). I really need to go listen to all their albums, but here are a few of my very favorite tracks.

| The Valley | Where is Your Rider | Soldier, Poet, King | Hello My Old Heart |

Mat Kearney

I think my liking for his music grew out of my 35 hours a week exposure to it. He's the main artist on the music radio we play at the café where I work, and I guess it's grown on me.

How did I do? Am I a total pop-culture disaster?? (never mind: the answer is always yes). If you want, tell me: what is your favorite song here, and did you enjoy Folklore and Evermore like everyone else???? Have you heard of Cody Fry??? I'm really curious.

hope your weekend is wonderful.

  2. Ed Sheeran was the soundtrack of my high school years, and I think his music will always have a piece of my heart. I'd never heard of Cody Fry, either, until you shared a few songs with me, and this was the best reminder that I really need to listen to more of his stuff.

Can't wait to dive into more of these recs - I haven't listened to much of The Oh Hellos or Mat Kearney at all, so I'll have to change that. :-)

  3. I have only seriously listened to Needtobreathe and Cody Fry from this list. I also shy away from mainstream pop HAHA but I should listen to these that you mentioned! The only one I haven't heard of is Mat Kearny.

    1. Mat Kearny is worth checking out! I feel you about pop music, it's difficult for me to love the predictability of it.
